Are you facing a marriage or relationship breakdown?

When the exception of 2017, figures from the National Office of Statistics show divorce rates continue to rise with 42% of marriages ending in divorce. Divorce continues to be one of the most stressful periods in a person's life.

Research also shows that the post-festive season is the time most divorces are initiated. With this in mind the Alsters Kelley family team look at how the process can be made as stress free as possible for all concerned.

If there are dependent children involved in the breakdown of the marriage, try and explain the situation to the children together and resist the temptation to talk negatively about the other parent. Encourage the children to ask questions but do not involve them in the adult discussion. It is important to give your children the message that it is okay to love and want to spend time with both parents without fear of upsetting the other parent.

Accept the situation and allow yourself to feel the loss, hurt or even anger. Reach out for support from family, friends or professional help if needed, however do not say or do anything derogatory which you will later regret. Remaining calm and dignified will work best in the long term for an amicable resolution. Accept that emotions will run high and that the divorce will take a while to resolve, you will need to be patient but remember things will get better.

Family, friends and even the Internet will all give you various horror stories and worst-case scenarios. At a time when you are already feeling stressed and low this will cause further alarm. Therefore, it is important you take legal advice from an experienced solicitor at an early stage so that you have clarity and you are empowered to make decisions.

Due to legal costs you may be tempted to represent yourself however you may either make an error or financially compromise yourself, at Alsters Kelley we explain the costs involved from the outset and ensure there are no hidden costs Our experienced solicitors will give you clear and honest advice without legal jargon.

Do not make any decisions in haste which you will later regret. It is important to engage with each other or each other’s solicitor. Effective communication from an early stage will save time and money in the long run. Burying your head in the sand or taking an acrimonious stance will only prolong proceedings, escalate your legal costs and the situation will become stressful.
