Ian Paterson update - sentence appealed

Ian Paterson, the disgraced breast surgeon who was jailed for carrying out unnecessary cancer operations, recently appealed his 15 year jail sentence.

In April 2017 Paterson was found guilty of 17 counts of wounding with intent.

Mr Paterson appealed this decision last week and the three Appeal Court Judges increased his jail term from 15 years to 20 years. The Judges held that the original sentence had been lenient and the Jurors also convicted Mr Paterson of 3 further wounding charges.

At the original trial, the Jury and public were made aware that Mr Paterson treated thousands of patients during his career where he exaggerated cancer risks and overcharged patients by recommending more expensive treatments.

Since the original trial, it has come to light that Mr Paterson also carried out hundreds of unnecessary operations on patients and that hundreds of claimants were bringing claims for the physical and psychological suffering they endured.

Alsters Kelley are representing several claimants to bring claims against Mr Paterson for negligence for unnecessary surgery.
